Bethesda Confirms The Elder Scrolls VI is Still Years Away, Crushing Fan Hopes
Seven years ago, Bethesda sent the gaming world into a frenzy with a simple logo reveal for The Elder Scrolls VI. Since then, news has been non-existent, leaving fans to hope that development was progressing steadily in the background. A recent update, however, has replaced that hope with a profound sense of disbelief.
In a new interview, Bethesda's Todd Howard provided a small but sobering update on the game's status. He confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI is still in the pre-production or "design phase," and that the studio's primary focus remains firmly on their new IP, Starfield, and its upcoming expansions.
Howard stated that the work being done on Starfield will ultimately benefit the next Elder Scrolls title, but his comments made it clear that active, full-scale production on the game has not yet begun. This confirms what many had feared: the release of The Elder Scrolls VI is still many, many years away.
The reaction from the fan community has been a predictable mix of disappointment, frustration, and dark humor. After such a long wait since the 2018 teaser, many are expressing their disbelief on social media that the project has seen so little progress. With Skyrim having been released in 2011, the gap between mainline Elder Scrolls games is set to be one of the longest in modern gaming history, with a release now not expected until 2028 at the absolute earliest.
For now, fans are left to come to terms with the reality that their return to Tamriel is not on the horizon, but somewhere far beyond it.
