How Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 Achieves the Impossible
When Cyberpunk 2077 was announced for the Nintendo Switch 2, the collective gaming world asked one question: how? The technical wizards at Digital Foundry have now provided the answer in a detailed breakdown, calling the ambitious port a "technical marvel" and a triumph of smart engineering.
The secret, as many suspected, lies in NVIDIA's DLSS upscaling technology. According to the analysis, the game leverages DLSS to reconstruct a clean image from a lower internal resolution, allowing the Switch 2's hardware to handle the immense demands of Night City.
In docked mode, the game targets a crisp 1080p resolution, maintaining a remarkably stable 30 frames per second. The experience holds up even during intense firefights, with only minor, occasional dips in the most crowded city areas. When played in handheld mode, the game targets the native 720p screen resolution and holds that 30fps lock just as effectively, making it a stellar portable experience.
Of course, some compromises were necessary. The port's overall visual settings are favorably compared to the PlayStation 4 Pro version. This means that while texture quality is surprisingly high, aspects like crowd density, traffic, and shadow quality have been scaled back compared to the powerful PS5 and PC versions. There are no ray-tracing features present.
However, Digital Foundry's verdict is overwhelmingly positive. They praise the port, handled by Saber Interactive (the team behind the impressive Witcher 3 Switch port), as a "masterclass in smart compromise." It's a testament to both the developer's skill and the capabilities of the Switch 2, proving that with clever use of AI upscaling, even the most demanding modern games have a future on Nintendo's new console hybrid.
